Managing Your Newsletter

Your newsletter can quickly become a monster if you don't have the proper systems in place to manage the beast.

You can manage your list of subscribers using a list management service or get software that allows you to do it yourself.

If you're just getting started, a good email software program will probably be all you need, but as your list grows you may find that the do-it-yourself method is just too cumbersome and time-consuming.

Do-It-Yourself Email Programs

Pegasus is a good freeware program you can start out with. There are some limitations with this program (such as no spell checker), but it provides the basic necessities to get the job done.

Another choice is Eudora. They offer a free version of their program which displays an advertisement while you're in the program.

Of the two, Pegasus is a bit more sophisticated at managing and filtering mail, but requires more time to get acquainted with. Eudora has the advantage of being really easy to install and set up.

As your list grows you may want to consider more sophisticated software. Programs such as GroupMail from Infacta.com and WorldMerge by ColoradoSoft.com are both good choices for personalizing and sending mail from your computer.

Collecting Subscriber Addresses

To collect email addresses you can use a free cgi script such as the one offered at WorldWideMart.com. Another increasingly popular email collection technique is the "one-click" script from OptInAutoMator.com.

List Management Services

A list management service handles the logistics of collecting subscriber addresses, organzing, and distributing your newsletter. This type of service is an ideal way to let someone else handle many of the technical tasks involved with newsletter distribution.

You'll have all the features to make your mailings the best they can be, which goes a long way towards presenting your business in a professional light. Three good services to check out are Roving.com, Dundee.net, and Sparklist.com. Any of these can provide reliable newsletter management services.

Another option is to use an autoresponder service. With an autoresponder service you can send a newsletter mailing plus have the added capability of sending automated follow-up emails to your list. Two good services are GetResponse and Aweber.
